New Mexico Department of Health - COVID19 Health Equity Initiative - New Mexico Is a Unique State with a Rich History of Cultural Diversity. IT Has the Distinction of Being One of the Few States in the US That Can Claim Majority-Minority Status in Which People of Color Make Up the Majority of the Population. Sixty Percent of New Mexicans Identify as a Racial or Ethnic Minority. The State Is Home to 23 American Indian Tribes, Pueblos, Nations, and Urban Indian Groups. They Make Up 11% of the Population. Individuals of Hispanic Culture and Origin Comprise 48% of the State's Population. At the Same Time, New Mexico Is Also a Very Rural State. Twenty-Six of the 33 Counties in the State Are Classified as Rural by the Office of Management and Budget (Omb). Thirty Percent of the Residents Live in Rural Areas. Unfortunately, These Groups Also Suffer from a More Significant Burden of Disease Stemming from Historical and Persistent Inequities and Were Disproportionately Affected by the COVID19 Pandemic. Despite These Challenges, New Mexico Has Dedicated Public, Private, and Nonprofit Sectors Working Toward Health Equity with the New Mexico Department of Health Leading the Way, Through Our Institutional Commitment to Improve Health Equity for All of New Mexico?s Diverse Communities.this Proposal Seeks to Address COVID-19 Related Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity in New Mexico by Addressing the Immediate and Intermediate Impact of COVID-19, While Building Off the Existing Foundation in New Mexico for Long-Term Health Equity Work. (Nmdoh, Hsd, CMS, 2016). Because of Long Standing Partnerships with Communities, Non-Profits, Universities, the Healthcare System, and Other State Departments, the Nmdoh Has Been Building the Trust and Credibility to Implement a Successful Health Equity Initiative in Communities. However, Due to the Reduction in Budget for the Nmdoh Over the Years, the Department Needs Further Funding to Fully Implement Our Equity Agenda. This Will Require ?Inside, Outside, and Across Strategies? To Help Frame the State?s Continued Response to the COVID19 Pandemic and Create Lasting, Institutionalized Health Equity in the State (Nche, 2019). Modeled After Human Impact Partners? Practice-Based Framework, the Funding from This Opportunity Will Implement Strategies Inside and Outside of Nmdoh to Build Internal Infrastructure to Drive an Equity Agenda, and Also Support ?Outside and Across? Activities External to the Nmdoh to Build Bridges Across Multiple Sectors to Drive Sustained Changes.
